Comparing Cycles Peugeot serial number label series
During the approximately 30 years of Cycles Peugeot serial number labels, I have seen two distinct series of serial numbers. The first series started in 1972 and ended in 1980. The second series started in 1980 and end with the expiration of the Cycleurope’s license to use the name Cycles Peugeot.
It must be noted that the serial numbers used in the first series on aluminum strips were not used sequentially. Bicycles with 1972 decal schemes will have serial numbers within the full range. Likewise, bicycles with 1975 decal schemes will have serial numbers within the full range. So the serial numbers in the first series on aluminum strips are not an indication of the year of the bicycle.
The serial numbers used in the first series on white labels appear to have been assigned sequentially.
The serial numbers used in the second sequence appear to be generally sequential and sequential within each of the two manufacturing facilities. This is checked by using the date codes within the frame numbers. Sometimes the serial number use from one factory will lag behind the other factory, when looking at the date codes on the frame number.
Here is chart showing the range of serial numbers used with different label types.
