Arnold, Schwinn & Company: Head Office locations

June 13, 2025 Arnold Schwinn & Co No Comments

Arnold, Schwinn & Company was established in Chicago in the last quarter of 1895. Over the years the company rented, purchased, and built several facilities in Chicago. This is the third in a series of posts about head office and factory locations in Chicago.

At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, Chicago was still an expanding urban area. Arnold, Schwinn & Co changed locations in Chicago over their history.

Here is a spreadsheet that attempts to track Arnold, Schwinn & Co. head office locations and addresses as these changed from 1895 to 1992.

This spreadsheet tries to take into account the location changes and the address number changes of the head office.

Arnold, Schwinn & Company’s 1895 location at 240 – 254 West Lake street. The building still exists today but the building number is 900.

The March-Davis location on north 44st Street was only temporary if it was ever used. I have never seen a picture of this location. I have never seen any Schwinn documents that use this address. I only know about March-Davis location from bicycle trade magazines from 1895 to 1901.

The building numbers for Arnold Schwinn & Co. plant No. 1 in 1902 are 945 to 947 North 43rd Ave. In 1910 the building numbers are 1718 to 1732 North 43d Ave. There are old maps of Chicago that show the old building numbering.

Numbered avenues in some parts of the city were changed to names. The new names came into effect August 15, 1913. North 43 Ave became North Kildare Ave and North 44th ave became North Kostner Avenue.

The next instalment will give details on the first two locations.
